The word used to describe the systematic murder of over six million European Jews and the destruction of their communites between 1941 to 1945. Many people now use the term to include over five million other non Jewish people who became victims of the Nazi terror either because they opposed the Hitler's ideology or because they too had lives the Nazis did not think had the worth to live.
