Ghetto
An area in European cities where at times throughout history, Jews had to live. In the Nazi times these were founded in central and eastern Europe after 1939. They were squalid areas of towns and cities that were eventually sealed off with walls and barbed wire and were guarded to prevent unauthorised entry or exit. They were a means by which the Nazis could concentrate the Jews to make it easy to transport them to death camps between 1942 and 1944.
