U-Z
Yiddish
Language once spoken by many Jewish communities. It is derived from medieval High German, and has many similarities with German although it is written in the Hebrew letters. Most of the jewish communities that spoke Yiddish were destroyed in the Holocaust, and since that time very little literature has been produced in this language. Some survivors of that time however still speak it, and some ultra orthodox Jews still use Yiddish as a first language.
