Chancellor of Austria is Murdered

HolocaustHistory.net - Holocaust Centre, Beth Shalom
Engelbert Dollfuss, Chancellor of Austria since 1932, is murdered in an attempted coup by the Austrian Nazis. Dollfuss had opposed Hitler's unification plans for Germany and Austria. He effectively ruled Austria as a fascist dictator which he saw as the best way to protect Austria from Hitler's ambition. He investigated ruthless suppression of the social Democrats on the one hand and the right wing Fatherland front on the other. Despite murdering Dollfuss, the Austrian Nazis failed to keep in power, as Dr Kurt von Schuschnigg led the government forces to quell them and maintain control.
