The
last elections to be held in the Reichstag. The Nazis did not hold a clear
majority. The Communists were expected to win around 100 seats of 600, but
Göring ensured their influence was squashed a few days earlier following
the fire in the Reichstag for which they were blamed. The Nazi's ploy worked
and they received 44 percent of the vote. This gave them enough support in
the Reichstag, with the Communists silenced or in prison to introduce the
Enabling Act on 23 March.
