Night of the Long Knives
On the night of 30 June, Ernst Rohm was arrested on Hitler's orders and shot two days later. Over 170 leading SA members were also shot. The 'Night of the Long Knives', as this political massacre became known, demonstrated Hitler's ruthlessness and reinforced his control. Over the following year, 155 SS officers were assassinated by members of the SA in revenge; however, as an organisation the SA quickly faded.
