Plebiscite in Saarland

HolocaustHistory.net - Holocaust Centre, Beth Shalom
A plebiscite is held in the Saarland. This is a prosperous region between France and Germany. Originally German, it had been administered by the League of Nations after the First World War. The people of the Saar voted by a majority of 91 percent to return to German control. Although they were 'returning home' the overwhelming support suggests there was little fear of the Nazis, despite Hitler's dictorship and two years after the establishment of the concentration camps in Germany.
